In the heart of Stockholm lies one of the world’s few national urban parks – a unique green space stretching from Ulriksdal in the north to Djurgården in the south. Djurgårdsrundan is a short and accessible cycling loop of 6.3 kilometers that lets you experience this very area on two wheels, without having to leave the city.

About the route

The loop starts from a starting point at coordinates that place it in the area around Djurgårdsbrunn or western Djurgården, near Stockholm’s inner city. Since it’s a circular loop you return to the same point where you started – practical for those cycling without a car or wanting to get there by public transport. At 6.3 kilometers, the route is a good length for a short excursion, a lunch break ride, or a relaxing Sunday cycle with the family. The national urban park offers a tangible nature experience with forest, water, and cultural heritage environments despite its urban setting.

The road and surface

Djurgården has a well-developed network of cycle paths and gravel park roads, and the loop likely runs along these. Some stretches may be asphalt and smooth, while other sections probably feature gravel surface in a more park-like environment. The exact route and surface may vary, but the area is generally cycling-friendly and moderately hilly – expect some minor elevation changes but nothing demanding. A mountain bike is not necessary; a regular city bike or hybrid bike works well.

Good to know

Djurgården is a popular destination and parts of the park area can be busy with pedestrians, especially during the summer months and fine holiday weekends. Be considerate and keep a lower speed in crowded passages. The area is surrounded by attractions such as Skansen, the Vasa Museum, and Rosendals Trädgård – take the opportunity to combine the bike ride with a visit. There are good opportunities to get to the starting point by tram or bus from central Stockholm. Bring water and make sure you have a charged phone if you’re unsure about the route – the loop is short but it’s always good to have navigation available.
