ECF och Content With Purpose bakom satsningen

The bicycle is much more than a means of transportation – it is a tool for better public health, sustainable cities, and stronger local economies. That is the message behind a new digital film series launched on September 17 during European Mobility Week.
ECF and Content With Purpose behind the initiative
The series is called The Power of Cycling and is a collaboration between European Cyclists’ Federation (ECF) and production company Content With Purpose. The material has been gathered from 21 countries, cities, and regions and consists of 16 documentary films, seven expert interviews, 12 so-called thought leadership films, one explainer film, and three case studies.
Laurianne Krid, CEO of European Cyclists’ Federation, emphasized the breadth of the series’ perspective. According to her, the films show how cycling contributes to public health, sustainability, and the European economy, and how it can build bridges between generations, abilities, and backgrounds. She argued that when society invests in cycling, it invests in all of this at the same time.
Six themes – from climate to tourism
The series is structured around six overarching themes:
- Cycling and local economies
- Health and wellbeing
- Urban planning and infrastructure
- Climate and air quality
- Technology and innovation
- Cycle tourism and cross-border connections
The films highlight, among other things, how streets and public spaces can be designed with people at the center, how research and new technology can make cycling more accessible, and how cycle tourism contributes to regional economies. Stories about mental and physical health, access to education and employment, cleaner urban distribution, and connecting communities are also included in the material.
Major challenges require concrete answers
ECF points to a number of structural challenges that form the backdrop to the series. One in three EU residents does not reach recommended levels of physical activity. Cars still dominate significantly – they account for approximately half of all trips and more than 70 percent of all passenger kilometers within the EU. The transport sector also generates about a quarter of the EU’s total greenhouse gas emissions, with road traffic accounting for approximately three quarters of that.
The series launches in the wake of the European Cycling Declaration, which recognizes cycling as an accessible and affordable means of transportation and contains commitments to safe cycling networks, connections to public transit, and secure bike parking.
Participating cities and organizations
Among the actors featured in the films are the city of Groningen, Helsinki’s environmental division, Central Denmark Region, ETH Zurich, the European Commission, Flanders, and KTH Royal Institute of Technology. Cycling and mobility companies such as Cyclehoop, Kalkhoff Bikes, and Lyft Urban Solutions are also represented.
Max Smith, founder and CEO of Content With Purpose, described the series’ ambition as showing that healthier, more connected, and more sustainable places are not a distant goal – but are already being created by people who understand the power of cycling.
Free to watch – and relevant in Stockholm too
The series is available to watch completely free and reached audiences digitally from September 17 onwards. For those of us who travel the streets of Stockholm daily, it is a welcome perspective: cycling is about so much more than getting from A to B.
